An Artist's Legacy and a Dealer's Admiration: Paintings by Sanford Robinson Gifford from Important American Collections is the culmination of Michael Altman's personal reverence and professional experiences with works by the foremost luminist painting, Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880). The forty-four works that comprise the exhibition range in subject and style, but are unified in the visual power and inherent value, having either been sold or personally acquired by Michael Altman during his three decades-long career. Drawn additionally from the personal collection of Dr. Sanford R. Gifford (the artist's great-grandnephew) and important private collections, each work is hand-selected to illustrate the artist's unmatched technically skill and unique ability to make permanent the temporality of his immediate surroundings.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, with contributions by Kevin J. Avery, Donald J. Christensen, and Sanford R. Gifford III.
