Church & Rothko: Sublime

30 September 2020 - 13 March 2021

Centered on the shifting manifestations of the sublime in American art, Church & Rothko: Sublime puts into dialogue the Hudson River School landscapes of Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) and the Color Field canvases of Mark Rothko (1903-1970), teasing out the affinities of these two evocative American artists.

Church and Rothko intuitively recognized the awesome emotive potential of color and sought to transform their pictorial environments into sublime spaces. In drawing together some of the most visually compelling works executed over the course of the respective careers, Church & Rothko: Sublime celebrates the radical and conceptual strategies by which these two leading American artists explored the natural and spiritual sublime.

Church & Rothko: Sublime is co-organized by Mnuchin Gallery, Michael Altman Fine Art & Advisory Services, and Christopher Rothko. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue authored by Dr. John Wilmerding.
